Are you as excited as I am about the new Canon 7D MkII???

Forget the new iPhone 6, this is what I want for Christmas!!! OK, so I'd take the new iPhone too, mine is just about dead...

Canon is one of those brands where loyal fans eagerly await announcement of new products, and the 7D MkII has been a long time coming. I was hoping it would be released earlier this year - I needed to upgrade my backup camera, and eventually gave up waiting for this one to arrive, and settled on the original - the 7D. Still an incredibly capable camera, it still felt a bit like a step backwards, as I am used to the current tech of my main body - my 5D MkIII.

Now I find myself drooling over what this new evolution of the 7D is capable of… I'll send you to some other sites for first impressions and reviews in a moment, but here are the features I'm most excited about:

  • 10fps (frames per second). Damn! Wildlife photography is one of my favourite past times, and one of the main reasons I upgraded to the 7D. My 7D is 8fps, but more is definitely better. Canon has also drastically increased the buffer so this insane shooting rate will get you upto 31 RAW or a staggering 1090 JPG shots on a single burst!!!
  • The Autofocus system. Once again for wildlife, the 65 cross type AF points is definite improvement - more in line with what I am used to on the 5D MkIII.
  • Dual memory card slots. Currently, my 7D takes a single CF card. My 5D MkIII takes a CF and an SD, and now so does the 7D MkII.
  • GPS built in. On my travels last year through Iceland and Scandinavia, I would have loved to have an in-built GPS receiver to geotag my shots as I took them… mainly to help me remember locations for later when entering metadata, captions etc. After 6 weeks on the road, with crazy Icelandic names like Fjaðrárgljúfur, having the map tell you where you were is mighty helpful!
  • The price!!! At only $1800 (USD) this is a bit of a bargain really!!!

Here is a quick video overview to give you a run down of the specs of this new puppy, courtesy of KelbyOne:

And if you want a more detailed description of how this camera might work for you (it's actually a comparison between the 70D and the 7D MkII) then head on over to Dan Carr's site.

So what do you think? Are you excited? Disappointed? Expecting different features? Let me know in the comments below if you think you'll be picking up a 7D MkII in the near future...
