It seems that just about every day we discover something new and exciting about living down the coast again in Gerringong. This time, it's whales!
We're incredibly lucky to have an ocean view from our bedroom, and to my delight one morning I actually saw some whales breaching from our bedroom balcony! They have been migrating up the coast for a few weeks now, and we've caught a glimpse or two from the headland on occasion also.
But this morning was amazing.... A southern right whale had come right into the shelter of Werri Beach - literally 20-30m off the shore. You can see the waves breaking right in the foreground!
From what I've been told they tend to travel up the coast from headland to headland, 'joining the dots' up the coast. It's not until they come back south with their new calves in spring that they take the time to stop and rest in the coves and bays along the coast. Perhaps this one was just having a bit of a breather - it has been incredibly windy here the last few days, no doubt creating all kinds of currents in the ocean.
Some lucky surfers were out enjoying some of Werri's best waves, and got a real close view as this gentle giant slowly drifted north up the beach.
And now that I've seen what the waves are doing, I may just head out for a surf!!!
